Equipment and Gear

This is a relatively complete list of the devices we use. We have multiples of several of these items, and we are constantly trying new devices and methods for our investigations. As we add to the list of things we use on a regular basis, we will update the site to reflect those new additions. Please click the button for the device you wish to see, or click "next" to cycle through all of our equipment. We have listed the equipment we use frequently, as well as experimental equipment, a brief description of what we use it for, and why we do so.

Large IR Cam

Large Infrared (IR) Surveillance Camera (6 and 12 mm lens)

These large infrared video cameras have lenses that allow us to take tighter shots in areas that are large enough to accomodate these cameras. We utilize these for focusing on a particular area or object, particularly down long hallways, across large rooms, etc. These are mounted on large tripods due to their weight.

Small IR Cam

Small Infrared (IR) Surveillance Camera (3.6mm lens)

These smaller infrared video cameras have lenses that allow us wider angles which are useful for covering larger areas without having to set up multiple cameras. We utilize these in rooms that need large coverage areas, anywhere we need wide angles (such as across the front of a house), etc. These are usually mounted on smaller tripods.

Miniature IR Cam

Miniature Infrared (IR) Surveillance Camera

These miniature infrared video cameras are extremely convenient for placing in areas we may not be able to set up a larger tripod-mounted IR cameras - on tables, window sills, and on top of shelving or furniture. These cameras have small lenses that allow wide angles for covering rooms, and also have wireless capability in the event we are unable to run a signal cable from our command center to the camera.

Full Spectrum Cam

Full Spectrum Surveillance Camera

This video camera is an experimental camera that is custom made for paranormal investigations. In addition to picking up light in the visible spectrum of light and infrared light, it is also sensitive to higher-frequency light on the opposite end of the visible spectrum into the Ultraviolet (UV) range. This allows us to see more than is visible with the naked eye or standard video cameras. These are tripod mounted and have an adjustable lens to allow us wide angle or zoom to place in virtually any room.

DVR

Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

All of the above surveillance cameras run into one of our digital video recorders. Presently, we have three DVR's with the ability to record up to 48 cameras simultaneously. We are able to monitor our investigations live from our control room, and can also download all of the video to external hard drives for the crew members to review.

DVR Flashlight

DVR Flashlight

This is a handheld video recording device built into a flashlight housing. It has the ability to shoot in IR as well as visible light, and is capable of recording 3 hours of video directly to the device.

HDD Nightshot

Hard Drive Nightshot Camcorder

This camcorder is a hard drive-based handheld video camera with Nightshot capability (utilizing low-light amplification technology and IR) to allow recording in very little light. This is utilized during our personal investigations, frequently with the aid of an IR Illuminator, to allow us to shoot real-time video that we can see live during the investigation. This is also helpful in allowing us to get footage in places where we may not have a surveillance camera.

Hi8 Nightshot Camcorder

Hi8 Nightshot Camcorder

This camcorder is very similar to the Hard Drive Nightshot, but records on Hi8 tapes instead of on a hard drive.

IR Blaster

IR Illuminator

These are lighting devices used to help illuminate dark areas with IR light to make them more visible to our cameras. We have stationary IR Illuminators (shown at left) that we can set up in rooms to illuminate large areas, as well as illuminators that attach directly to our handheld camcorders for mobile use.

EMF Detector

Single-Axis Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Detector

This detector measures the varying strength of low-frequency electromagnetic fields. It allows us to detect stationary electromagnetic fields, as well as momentary fluctuations in the fields. There are several reasons for us to monitor these fields, and one of the prevailing paranormal theories is that EMF and paranormal activity are connected.

KII

K-II Meter

The KII Meter is one of the most popular and well-known devices for paranormal investigations. It is also an EMF detector, but instead of providing a constant numerical readout of the strength of a field, it detects momentary changes in higher frequency EM fields. This device is typically used to identify stationary fields, as well as give us a means of attempting to interact with paranormal entities.

Melmeter

Mel-8704-ProNavigator

This meter is designed for paranormal research, and serves several different uses - It is a single-axis EMF detector, a thermometer for monitoring air temperatures to within a tenth of a degree, a highly sensitive vibration detector, and a flashlight.

Zoom

Zoom H2 Audio Recorder

The Zoom H2 Audio Recorder is an ultra high sensitivity audio recorder with built in microphone that we utilize for recording Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). This device was made for creating live recordings of musical performances, lectures, etc. The microphone is completely adjustable to allow directional or omni-directional recordings; it has variable sensitivity to allow us to fine-tune our recordings to gain the desired amount of sound; it also features a headphone output that allows us to listen to recordings in real time, which we use as a means of listening for EVP as we perform the investigation, rather than later during evidence review.

Audio Recorders

Various Audio Recorders

We have a variety of compact digital audio recorders with built-in microphones that we use for capturing EVPs. These devices range in brand from RCA, Olympus, and even the recorder in the Apple iPhone. In addition, we have an Audio-Technica omnidirectional microphone that can be used with the recorders to provide higher-sensitivity recordings with lower background noise.

Wireless Mic

Pyle Pro Wireless Microphone System

The wireless microphone system can be used to allow us to send an audio signal wirelessly from one location back to our command center. This allows us to record audio directly to our DVR's instead of to the recorders.

Negative Ion Generator

Negative Ion Generator
[EXPERIMENTAL]

The Negative Ion Generator is an experimental device that emits negatively charged ions into the area around the device. Some theories indicate that high levels of atmospheric ionization may contribute to, or coincide with, paranormal activity (this is the reason there seems to be an increase of activity during storms where lightning is present). So, in other words, this device is meant to help increase activity in a particular area.

Plasma Ball

Plasma Ball
[EXPERIMENTAL]

The Plasma Ball is another experimental device that creates high Electromagnetic Fields, as well as emits high levels of IR and UV light (if you look at the picture, you can see IR light emitting past the glass globe at the bottom of the device). Again, some theories indicate a relationship between EMF and paranormal activity, and this device allows us to attempt to create an electromagnetic field that may be able to be manipulated by an entity.

UV Light

UV Lights
[EXPERIMENTAL]

The Ultraviolet Lights are used with our full-spectrum camera to illuminate the end of the electromagnetic spectrum that is beyond the visible light spectrum (Ultraviolet), but that can still be detected by the Full-spectrum camera. Currently, we are using blacklights, but will be switching to a more specific type of light that reaches deeper into the UV spectrum and gets farther away from being visible to the naked eye.
